With the heat of July upon us, and everyone back from their early summer adventuring, we have been enjoying the delightful treat of visiting local swimming holes. As a new resident of the McKenzie River watershed, friends have been happy to show me their favorite spots up Blue River and Lookout Creek, and as a longtime swimming hole dipper, I must say there are some excellent swimming holes in these here hills.
Unlike the slower, meandering eddies and silty, green holes I had found exploring up the Siuslaw and Smith Rivers when I lived out by the Coast Range, these waters are crystal clear, and cold enough to take your breath away when you jump in on a hot afternoon.
There are always plenty of places to explore and discover up and down stream.
A good swimming hole is always fun to share with old friends.
And new ones.
It’s also a great opportunity to show off those moves from swim team.
Whether you dip your toes, soak your feet, wade in or dive with abandon, it’s the best way to spend a summer afternoon in the country.
