With our first frost came some hurried harvesting this week. Since October is well underway, we decided to harvest the pumpkins. What makes this pumpkin harvest so special is that we didn’t have to travel to another farmer’s field to do it. We grew these pumpkins right here in our own field. For many years I have dreamed of having my own pumpkin patch, so this was a big deal!
I planted jack-o-lantern pumpkins, sugar pie pumpkins, gourds, and little baby boo pumpkins in a big patch by our corn. They have been peeking out bright orange, white, yellow and green from the leaves and weeds over the past weeks.
My son, a fellow pumpkin lover, was excited to pull up all the prizes to fill our wheelbarrow. All but his great pumpkin. His grandma sent him some giant pumpkin seeds (they were the size of quarters!) and he has been watching his one giant pumpkin turning orange for weeks now. He said it needs to go another week. I didn’t argue. To see this marvelous specimen of a pumpkin, you can visit my previous blog post.
The wheelbarrow was piled full with pumpkins and gourds of all different shapes, sizes and colors. Some were lumpy, some were warty and some were teeny-tiny. My son noted that there were some definite fairy pumpkins in the mix.
I put the sugar pie pumpkins in the pantry, and we put all the rest all around our front porch rails. It’s the best display of front porch pumpkins I’ve seen yet! We even put little baby boo pumpkins on top of each fence post along our front yard. It’s starting to look like fall around here.
