I am happy to report that the mushroom hunting is good in the new neighborhood. There are a couple of fungi out there that I always hear about other people finding, and how they were delectable and amazing, and I have seemed to never find them. Everything I ever heard about Chicken of the Woods sounded fabulous to me, including reports of a meaty texture and lemon chicken-esque flavor, not to mention growing in huge day-glo clumps on logs. And I never met a chicken I didn’t like. Every mushroom hunting trip I’ve been out on, I have found just about every other kind of mushroom a person could find, except Chicken of the Woods, until this weekend…
My partner and I were out spending a rainy Sunday on a mushroom hunting expedition, exploring some new spots and finding abundant Golden Chanterelles, when all of a sudden he told me to look at the side of a log. The entire thing was covered with big, orange, happy, ruffly clusters of Chicken of the Woods. I’m pretty sure I made quite a racket whooping and hollering over my exciting mushrooms. It was a find, indeed.
We ended up with a good haul that afternoon, and are enjoying delights like mushroom gravy, cream of Chanterelle soup, pumpkin mushroom lasagne, and curry with Chicken of the Woods just to name a few dishes. It’s good to be a mushroom hunter.

Oh so awesome! You got a ton of mushrooms. I've never had chanterelle or chicken of the woods. I wonder if they are anywhere in Michigan, heehee.

I will try to get that recipe up soon. Really yummy with pumpkin cream sauce! And Su, I bet you've got some edible mushrooms in the woods up your way.
