Simply by the fact that this is noteworthy, you can tell we don’t get a lot of snow around here. If we do, it doesn’t stick around for very long, so it’s a big deal! Yesterday morning we woke up to snow coming down, and before we knew it, there were over 7 inches with no sign of going anywhere. The town shut down, school was cancelled, and folks holed up in their homes and enjoyed the snow day. We managed to make it into town with the skillful winter driving of my Midwesterner partner so we could pick up the kids and our friend Logan, run a few errands, and make it back upriver by nightfall for an evening of sledding, snowball fights, hot cocoa and warm gluten-free gingerbread fresh from the oven. A proper winter evening.
With more flakes continuing to fall during the night, we woke up this morning to this.
Temperatures aren’t expected to rise above snow melting level until early in the week, so it was fun to take a leisurely morning in the snow knowing it wasn’t going away by mid afternoon.
Mostly everyone was excited about this beside the chickens. With their newly remodeled coop underneath this old barn, they were happy to just hang out in their spacious home carpeted with nice, warm straw looking out at the wintry filbert orchards below.
It looked like Old Man Winter had been out there just having a grand old time!
The kids got right down to sledding as soon as breakfast was done. With this hilly driveway of ours, we are in the perfect spot for this. My son has been talking about snow days and sledding since last May!
Some wonderful snow creatures made appearances on our back porch while they were out and about.
We got out our Little House on the Prairie Cookbook and made traditional molasses snow candy. It made for a wonderfully sticky mess, and lots of gooey smiles.
With a few more days of this ahead of us, I am more than happy to cozy up, make warm drinks and treats, decorate for the holidays and enjoy it while it lasts. Tomorrow may be the first time we go cut a tree out in the snow, and not to mention the first time we get to cut one in our very own woods.
Cheers to snow days!

Your place looks beautiful in the snow. Like the sound of gluten free gingerbread. I recently gave up gluten for a month and felt much better for it.
We've had snow for a few weeks now and it will generally still be here in april (when we are all sick of the sight of it)

My son has been on a gf diet since he was 7, and I love this recipe for gingerbread because it's gf originally and I don't have to adapt it. I'll try to get a post for that soon.
